Every figure here comes from the figures you enter and the method stated beside it: your document count, your own hourly worth, your expected price. This site publishes no valuation, no tax position and no legal opinion; what a clause means for your deal is your solicitor's and your accountant's.

A clinical practice is valued on the same arithmetic as any other business and then constrained by something no other trade has to think about: where referrals are involved, the price itself has to be defensible as fair market value and may not reflect the value of those referrals. That single rule shapes how these deals are priced, who signs off on them, and why a figure that would be unremarkable in another trade can be a problem here. This page is about what a buyer examines and what the constraint does to the negotiation. It does not value your practice.

What a healthcare valuation examines first

Payer mix and concentration, because a practice that depends on one contract is a practice whose earnings can change without anybody doing anything wrong. Then the provider roster and which clinicians are staying, the split between owner-produced and associate-produced revenue, the treatment mix and its margins, and the ancillary services. Equipment and premises come last, and they are the part owners usually lead with.

Why healthcare business valuation carries a ceiling other trades do not

Under the physician self-referral rules, fair market value means the value in an arm's length transaction consistent with the general market value of the subject transaction, and for the rental of space or equipment it is explicitly measured without the additional value a party would attribute to proximity to a referral source (42 CFR 411.351). The practical effect is that the price, the compensation arrangements and any lease between the parties all have to stand on their own commercial terms, which is why an independent valuation is a document these transactions need rather than a comfort.

Healthcare valuations of a single-clinician practice, honestly

The harder the practice is to separate from the clinician, the more of the value is personal goodwill, and personal goodwill does not transfer by itself. A physician practice valuation where one person produces most of the revenue is really a valuation of a transition plan: how long the seller stays, on what terms, and what happens to the patient list if they leave early. Optometry practice valuation and chiropractic practice valuation run the same way and usually carry more equipment beside it.

What to assemble before the first meeting

Three years of production by provider and by payer. The payer contracts themselves, with their rates and their termination provisions. The lease. The equipment list with ages and service history. Any compensation arrangement with a referring party, because that is what a buyer's counsel will ask for first. And a written, honest account of what happens to the practice if the owner stops seeing patients on completion day.

Medical practice valuation: common questions

How is a physician practice valuation different from any other business?

The arithmetic is the same and the constraint is not. Where referrals are in the picture, the price and any associated arrangement must be defensible as fair market value determined without regard to the value of those referrals, so the valuation is evidence in a compliance file as well as a negotiating position. That is why these deals lean on independent appraisals far more than a comparable trade sale would.

What moves a chiropractic practice valuation or an optometry practice valuation most?

How much of the patient relationship survives the owner leaving, and how much of the revenue is ancillary rather than personally delivered. A practice with associates producing a meaningful share, a recall system that works and equipment in good order transfers far more cleanly than one where the owner is the practice.

How much is a home health agency worth?

No page can tell you, and the inputs are unusually specific: licensure and whether it transfers, payer mix and the share of it that is public program revenue, the clinician roster and turnover, and the compliance history. Those four decide the answer long before any multiple is applied.
